Andriod is an open source software stack for mobile devices that includes an opearting system. middleware and key appliciations. Google inc purchased the pritial developer of the software,Android Inc., in 2005, Android’s mobile opearting system is based upon modified version of the Linux kernel. Google and other members of the open Handset Alliance Collaboratedon Android’s development and release the Android open source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the maintaince and further development of Android
Canlays reported that in Q4 2010 the Android opearting system was the world’s best-selling smart phone platform, dethroning Nokia’s symbian from the 10-year top position
Android Inc. acquired by Google :
Google acquired Android Inc. In August 2005, making Android Inc. awholly-owned Subsidiary of Google Inc. Key employees of Android Inc. including Andy Rubin, Rich Miner and Chris white, stayed at the company after the acquisition
Not much was known about Android Inc. at the time of the acquisition so many assumed that google was planing to enter the mobrile phone market with this move

Android has seen a number of updates since its original release these updates to the base opearting system typically force on fixing bugs as well as adding new tea tures Generally each new Versions of Android operating system is developed under a code name based on a dessert item.
The most recent released version of Android
1) 2.0/2.1 (Eclair), which revamped the user interface & introduced HTMES & Ex change, Active Syne 2.5 Support
2) 2.2 (Froyo) which introduced speed improvements with JIT optimization & the chrome V 8 Java script engine, & added wi-fi hotspot tethering and Adode Flash support,
3) 2.3 (Gingerbread) which retined the user interface, improved the soft key board copy/ paste features and added support for Ner field communication.
4) 3.0 (Honey Camb) A table- oriented release which supports larger screen devices and introduces many new user intereface feature and supports multicore
proces sors and hardware accelaration for graphics other Honeycamb SDK has been reteased and the first device teatuvidy this version, the Motorola Xoom tablet, went on sale in February 2011.
The upcoming Version of Android :
* Ice-Cream Sandwich, A Combination of Gingerbread and Honey-Camb into a “Co hesive Whole” with a possible release in mid- 2011
